Frequently Asked questions
What are heritage timber windows?
Heritage timber windows are windows designed to preserve the original character of an older property, like a listed building or a home in a conservation area.
While these windows look like the traditional windows that were originally installed, they have modern benefits. For example, double glazing to insulate the building and dampen sound.
What are the planning regulations surrounding heritage timber windows?
The planning regulations vary from local authority to local authority and depend on the type of building you own. As a general rule of thumb, you need to ensure you replace your windows on a ‘like-for-like’ basis. For example, if your original windows are sash windows, your new ones must be sash windows too.
Planning regulations are stricter for listed buildings than period properties and buildings in conservation areas.
If in doubt, we recommend getting in touch with your local authority’s planning department.
We can help you through the installation process, letting you know if you need to get consent and ensuring your new heritage timber windows comply with regulations.
How long do timber windows last?
The benefit of timber windows (especially if you use a hardwood like oak or beech) is that they are extremely durable and hard-wearing.
A good-quality timber window frame can last up to 60 years, even longer if it’s maintained well.
How much do bespoke heritage timber windows cost?
It depends on the wood you choose, the window style, and how many windows are needed. Plus you need to take any planning permission costs into consideration.
However, a good heritage timber window is more affordable than you might think, and as they last so long, they provide a great return on investment.

Would thoroughly recommend them!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Andrew Bell03/07/2024Totally fantastic and professional service from start to finish and beyond. Neil is brilliant and provided a full quote, our door was made exactly to specification fully painted with all parts included for. The door was fitted all in one day with no fuss. Beyond this we have had fantastic after service where Neil has come out at a moments notice. Couldn't recommend them any more enthusiastically.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Alan Haddick12/06/2024We bought an old chapel that had been used as an hostel and was very neglected. We have a long way to go but thanks to Ochiltree we have a magnificent front door. We gave them clear instructions on what we wanted and they exceeded our expectations. To add to that, everyone at Ochiltree was very professional and highly skilled in what they do.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Ed Jones11/06/2024Ochiltree replaced the rotten wooden, single glazed windows in the bedrooms and attic of our period property with matching style double glazed Acoya windows and we are delighted with the results. During the quotation, Neil listened to our requirements and presented us with several good options. We were slightly worried about the fitting of the bathroom and attic windows as access was not straight forward but this wasn't an issue for the Ochiltree team who were able to complete the job without any fuss. The fitters Jonny and Andy were real grafters and were careful and considerate around the house and were happy to discuss matters as the work progressed. The windows have made such a big difference to the look and feel of the house. I would happily recommend Ochiltree to anyone; their costs are competitive and the quality of their workmanship and service is excellent.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.David Jones11/05/2024We had 3 external doors and 2 windows replaced by Ochiltree. Our house is an old farmhouse so the dimensions are unusual. Neil and his team did a great job. Every stage was handled professionally and with a smile. The quality of the work is exceptional. Every stage was bespoke, including matching the height of the cat flap to the old door (they are fussy). We are very happy and so are the cats!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Will Scott29/04/2024Ochiltree provided us with new exterior doors and windows to the highest standard of workmanship and service. Absolutely delighted with the outcome.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Lottie Watkinson07/02/2024We are delighted with our new front door from Ochiltree Joinery! It replaced a door which was rotting, draughty and leaking, and we are so pleased to have a solid, watertight door with glazing to give much more light. The quality of workmanship is outstanding and the finish is perfect. Neil is friendly and communicative and the team who came to fit the door were professional and tidy. We’re so happy to have a watertight, draught proof double glazed front door. It was by no means cheap but the door has transformed our cottage, inside and out, and you definitely get what you pay for (in a good way!) with Ochiltree. Highly recommended.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Neil Trodden16/10/2023We bought a 1930s house which had a nice wide wooden door - with drafts blowing through it, single lock, plain single-glazed glass with no privacy. Poor security, and it was twisted in the frame. We looked for a company online to fit a new door but your typical composite door looked horrible and other companies are out there who will fit an engineered wooden door but it was always a case of "pick from these options" and for the price, you really want what YOU want. Ochitree made it simple - you can have exactly what you want. So we sketched out our idea, a little back and forth with Neil and we settled on a design. The helped match the glass on our side window perfectly, we got the exact colour we wanted and most importantly when they sketched up the initial mock-up, made some recommendations about scale so it looked in proportion. The fitters were the best I've ever had for any installation. The door is perfect and when they left, I didn't have to so much as wipe a surface down. This door is perfect and it'll outlast us.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My Dog Barber04/10/2023From the first enquiry call I knew Ochiltree Bespoke Joinery were going to be great and they didn't disappoint, every aspect of the project from planning to installation was effortless. The quality of their work is outstanding with every detail well considered. We couldn't be happier and look forward to working with Ochiltree again.
